I see a horror, survivor and disaster movie plot buried within this story. Very rare you can get all three!!

Electronics Eating Ants

And this is just way too funny. Americans new export: Trashy bratty teenagers.

So I used this handy little calculator just now and it told me how much I should weigh by 40 weeks and I think I'm going to go vomit now.

Oh, dear g-d. How do women not totally lose all sense of self-esteem during pregnancy?

(Although, I've gained a couple of pounds less than I am "on track" to do at this point, so I guess I should just shut up and relax.)

On That Hillary–Hitler Video: The verdict is in [16 May 2008|11:37am]
memestreams

A number of readers complained to me or to Harper’s about that delightful Hillary-as-Hitler video I posted the other day, which was created by comedian James Adomian. But the public has spoken (or rather, clicked), and the critics appear to be in the minority:

First uploaded to YouTube May 7, “Hillary’s Downfall” has tallied more than 300,000 views. The bump in views skyrocketed Adomian’s account to the sixth-most-viewed comedian slot this week, into the realm of YouTube web comedy staples like Michael Buckley and College Humor’s video channel…”I don’t have the resources to release my complaints in real time, like on a talk show,” said Adomian. “So I thought it was cathartic to imagine what it would be like in Hillary’s bunker when they got the bad news [that she’d lost the nomination].”

MemeStreams Update: Firefox 3 Display Problems [16 May 2008|08:47am]
memestreams

The display problems with MemeStreams in Firefox 3.0b5 have been resolved.

Firefox 3 is so standards compliant that the non-standard HTML we use over at Industrial Memetics broke it. Someday we will get some standards.

It's been tested so far with Firefox 3, Firefox 2, Safari 3, and IE7. Let me know anyone experiences any further display problems.

[ mood | hot ]

I am totally stupid about walking in the insane heat. It was around 100 when we walked down to lunch today, and it never occurred to me that MAYBE being pregnant would actually impede this activity until I had the ripping uterine pain about 5 minutes from the restaurant. Luckily, a coworker gave me a ride back, but... yeah, it's hard, when you feel mostly normal, to remember crap like "don't walk around in sweltering weather, dummy!"

In other news, it's almost 10:30pm and still 85 degrees. Sleeping in this is gonna be fun. :P

Dash Navigator gets open API? [16 May 2008|01:10am]
memestreams

Dash, which makes the very cool Dash Express GPS gizmo for cars review , has opened up an API so developers can build new apps for the unit. On announcement, according to a company press release, several apps will be available: a homes-for-sale app from Coldwell Banker, a calendar app that can read appointments from Outlook, Google and automatically route you to them, a weather app from WeatherBug, a speed trap app from Trapster, and Mediaguide, which can display the songs that just played on local radio stations.

I want the Trapster app. Not only is this the most useful of the apps, I believe, it s also the one that leverages the Dash s two-way capability the best: You can add to the Trapster database when you drive through a speed trap yourself. There may even be a button that says, Yo, I am getting pulled over right now. I haven t tried the service yet; I don t know.

Even cooler would be: Let me connect my Valentine One to the Dash device to update the database automatically.

The Dash API program faces two small problems, though: First, there s the chicken-and-egg issue for a non-market-leading platform. Dash is hardly the best-selling GPS product, even if it is the coolest. Developer interest will wane unless consumers start to get behind this product.

Second: Safety. I don t know how Dash is going to ensure that developers don t build distracting or confusing apps that get their users into trouble when they re driving. Building for the 60-m.p.h. user interface is not something many developers have experience with. Hopefully this will be addressed is Dash s presentation at the Where 2.0 conference Wednesday morning.

Current Dash Express users can go to the MyDash site for apps.

Does TomTom or any other NAV. system have an open API?

Robotic suit could usher in super soldier era - Yahoo News [15 May 2008|10:04pm]
memestreams
[ Image Link ]

Jameson — who works for robotics firm Sarcos Inc. in Salt Lake City, which is under contract with the U.S. Army — is helping assess the 150-pound suit's viability for the soldiers of tomorrow. The suit works by sensing every movement the wearer makes and almost instantly amplifying it.

The Army believes soldiers may someday wear the suits in combat, but it's focusing for now on applications such as loading cargo or repairing heavy equipment. Sarcos is developing the technology under a two-year contract worth up to $10 million, and the Army plans initial field tests next year.

Before the technology can become practical, the developers must overcome cost barriers and extend the suit's battery life. Jameson was tethered to power cords during his demonstration because the current battery lasts just 30 minutes.

But the technology already offers evidence that robotics can amplify human muscle power in reality — not just in the realm of comic books and movies like the recently debuted "Iron Man," about a wealthy weapons designer who builds a high-tech suit to battle bad guys.

Study: Cox, Comcast Internet subscribers blocked - Yahoo News [15 May 2008|10:04pm]

A study released Thursday found conclusive signs that file-sharing attempts by subscribers of Cox Communications were blocked, along with customers at Comcast and Singapore's StarHub.

Of the 788 Comcast subscribers who participated in the study, 62 percent had their connections blocked. At Cox, 54 percent of subscribers examined were blocked, according to Krishna Gummadi at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems in Saarbruecken, Germany. The institute examined the network connections of 8,175 Internet subscribers around the world.

Philadelphia-based Comcast is the country's second-largest Internet service provider, with 14.1 million subscribers. Atlanta-based Cox Communications is the fourth-largest, with 3.8 million. It is part of privately held Cox Enterprises Inc.

Rex Jameson bikes and swims regularly and plays tennis and skis when time allows. But the 5-foot-11, 180-pound software engineer is lucky if he presses 200 pounds — that is, until he steps into an "exoskeleton" of aluminum and electronics that multiplies his strength and endurance as many as 20 times.

Myspace.com Blogs - Orwellian Los Angeles - Keith MySpace Blog [15 May 2008|03:35pm]
memestreams

Well last week here in Los Angeles, I was waiting to board the redline (subway) and snapped a picture with my cell phone camera. Not the best picture in the world, but I was just putzing around, waiting for the train, holding a quizno's to-go bag. Almost immediately, a vest wearing man with METRO emblazoned on his back who had been mopping the area nearby rushed up to me and the exchange went something like this:
Him: Hey! It's against the 9-11 Law to take pictures down hear man!
Me: You mean the Patriot Act?
Him: No pictures.
Me: Could you explain? What law do you mean?
Him: You are lawyer?
Me: No.
Him: No pictures. You could be a terrorist. Very strict!
Me: How about I take a picture of you?
Him: F**k you...(I couldn't believe it either)
He then proceeded to huddle in the corner and speak into his radio. Next thing I knew, a booming female voice very loudly announced over the loudspeaker "Attention to the gentleman in the plaid shirt: You are not allowed to take photographs in the Subway. You will be arrested if you continue to take photos and harrass the metro worker."

Photos are harassing..?? The paparazzi's are gonna be pissed. Good thing for terrorists they know how to use spy cams and cell phones to photograph their vacations. Hopefully they'll never find out about google earth.

Today has been the most perfect weather in the history of perfect weather! YES. MORE LIKE THIS. If the weather here was like this all the time, I would be one happy camper. My life would be perfect and I would shit rainbows 24/7, I'm sure. It's 2AM and it's still, like, 70 degrees. GOD BLESS GLOBAL WARMING. Sure, it probably means we're going to be extinct in a couple of decades, but at maybe the weather in San Francisco will cease to suck for a few years in the meantime. You know. Before the food riots, and plagues from the mountains of corpses and whatnot.
